Praying behind Imām who performs Qunūt regularly in Fajr | The Permanent Committee

Q: What is the ruling on praying behind an Imām who makes Qunūt in the second Rak‘ah of every Fajr Prayer before Rukū‘ ? Is Qunūt in the Fajr Prayer a Sunnah or Mustaḥab (desirable)?

A: Qunūt in the Fajr Prayer is not prescribed except in afflictions. This is because the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not do it except in afflictions. It was not authentically confirmed that he made Qunūt constantly. Praying behind the Imām who constantly makes Qunūt is valid; however, the Ma’mūm (a person being led by an Imām in Prayer) should not follow him, instead he should repeat,

“رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حمدًا كثيرًا طيِّبًا مُبارَكًا فيه ، مِلْءَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْارْضِ، وَمِلْءَ مَا شِئْتَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ بَعْدُ”

“O our Rabb, to You be praise, much good and blessed praise, filling the heaven, filling the earth, and filling whatever else You will.”

May Allāh grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
