Specified are Festivals for Every Nation

ʿAlī bin Abī Ṭalḥah reported that Ibn ʿAbbās said,

❝And for every nation We have appointed religious ceremonies❞

Sūrah al-Hajj 22:34

(Meaning) “Festivals.”

Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr

❝And those who do not bear witness to falsehood❞

Sūrah al-Furqān 25:72

This is stated as one of the characteristics of Allāh’s believing servants. A group of the salaf (righteous predecessors), including: Ibn Sirīn, Mujāhid, and Al-Rabiʿ bin Anas, interpreted the word “Az-Zūr (falsehood)” as referring to the festivals of the Kuffār.

Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr 3/435

Al-Bayḥaqī narrated from ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allāh be pleased with him) that he said:

“Avoid the enemies of Allāh during their festivals.”

Al-Bayḥaqī (19334)

Al-Bayḥaqī narrated with a good chain of narration from ʿAbdullāh bin ʿAmr that he said: “Whoever settles in the land of the non-Arabs and celebrates their Nayrūz (new year) and Mahrajān (festival) and imitates them until he dies in that state, will be gathered with them on the Day of Resurrection.”

Aḥkām Ahl al-Dhimmah, 1/723-724

It was narrated that Anas bin Mālik -may Allāh be pleased with him- said:

The people of the Jāhiliyyah had two days each year when they would play. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to Al-Madinah he said:

‘You had two days when you would play, but Allāh (ﷻ) has given Muslims something instead that is better than them: the day of Al-Fitr and the day of Al-Adhā.’
