Etiquette of the Prophet while sneezing | Shaykh Muḥammad ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān al-Mubārakfūrī

The Muḥaddith Shaykh Abu al-ʿUlā Muḥammad ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd ar-Raḥīm al-Mubārakfūrī – May Allāh have mercy on him- mentioned in his explanation of the following Ḥadīth:

Narrated Abu Hurairah -May Allāh be pleased with him- that:

“When the Prophet ﷺ would sneeze, he would cover his face with his hand or with his garment, and (thereby) muffle the sound by it.”

Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 2745 (Ḥadīth Ḥasan Ṣaḥīḥ)

Al-Ḥāfidh (Ibn Ḥajr al-Asqalānī رحمه الله) said:

“From the manners of the one who sneezes is that he lowers his voice while sneezing and raises it while praising Allāh (saying ‘Alḥamdulillāh’), and that he covers his face lest what comes out of his mouth or his nose should harm his companion. Also, he does not turn his neck to the right or to the left to avoid being harmed by that.”

Tuḥfah al-Aḥwadhī bi-sharḥ Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī

Also he mentioned that it has been narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Ḥākim.
